BE 2010 Not removing VMWARE snapshots from VCenter

I need a solution

Hi there, As the title states, we can see on the VCenter server that BE2010 is not removing the snapshots of the VM's after it has completed a backup, providing some backups do fail at times and some are a good run, however the backlog is becoming big and taking allot of storage space.

Please advise on some simple steps to check to ensure that BE2010 is infact removing the snapshots or "ghost" snapshots from the Vcenter

We are running W2K8 R2 with BE2010 SP3

Backup Disk to Disk to Disk

I need a solution

Hello,

Just wondering if its possible to do a "disk to disk to disk" backup scenario?

What i want to do is have a decidated backup server with a large internal hard drive array, perform an intial backup over night to that, and then once it completes do another backup to an external hard drive.

I know this can kinda be done already by have two backup jobs.

Job 1. Backup the server to the backup server

Job 2. Backup the backup server data to USB Drives

But that means i've essentially backing up backed up data... if that makes sense.

What i almost want to do is a simple copy from the backup server to the USB drives...but i would like that to be done all through backup exec (without the use of scripts preferably.

Cheers

I need a solution

Hi,

We have the following infra.

Backup Exec 2010 R2 on Windows 2003 Ent. SP2 (32bit). As Master and Media server

RALUS of BE 2010 R3 installed on RHEL 5.4 64 Bit. As BE Client

We have installed the RALUS of BE 2010 R3 on the RHEL and its was successful. We have started the VRTUS** service in /etc/init.d

Restarted the backup service in the BE 2010 R2 server.

When we are trying to browse after adding the Linux server IP in the "User defined" section... I am getting the user authentication window to choose the user from.

I am giving the root user with correct password but still the authentication window  is poping up.

I have added the IP address and host name in the hots file in both the servers (linux and windows ).

Just to add this BE 2010 R3 server's IP address have changed but the host name remained the same.

And I am giving the host name in the RALUS configuration.

Thanks.

I need a solution

Hi,

Have just purchased the license and dowmloaded the software. Not really shure what's the best practise in installing the product.

We have a Windows server 2012 HOST with 4 virtuall machines at the moment (will be about 15 soon).

Some questions:

- Where should we install the software? On the HOST.

- Can we backup to a network NAS (share)?

- We have a backup server (2008 std) which are running Symantec Bakup Exec 2012 for backup of data. Can we use the same server?

Any answere would be most appreciated.

Regards,

I need a solution

Team,

Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3

Windows 2008

All of sudden I started receiving the below alerts and backups failed in my environment, “an error was encountered writing to the on-disk catalogs”

So I have created a new catalog folder with the help of the article

All backups were running successfully and the alerts also stopped,  But now my problem is when I go to restore tab I could not see the old backups.

What is the solution to view all the backup in the restore windows??????

I need a solution

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 where I have installed Backup Exec 2010 R3 SP3, I am backing up two virtual machines, hosted in Hyper-V 2008.

One Virtual machine is Windows 2012 Server standard and the other is windows 2008 R2

The exception I get is "Unable to collect necessary metadata to perform GRT level restore"

Any idea on why this has occured and how to solve this would be much helpful...

Thanks,

Ram

Upgrading agent from 12.5 to 2012 is hangining on "Validating install"

I need a solution

I ended up following symantecs document to manually remove the 12.5 agent from my 2003 std server. I rebooted and now I'm trying to get the 2012 agent to install which is completing but keeps getting hung up at the end.

It just sits there on "Validating Install" with msiexec.exe eating up 50% forever, I finally just have to kill the service. Has anyone run into this or have any ideas?  Thanks.

Unable to perform a restore from tape

I need a solution

Hello forum,

I hope someone may be able to shed some advice on this situation. I have a client that currently has Backup Exec 2010 R2 (without the new SP) that needs to retain old tape backups for retention policy purposes. We are currently attempting to recatalog tapes as the environment that Backup Exec previously managed has changed.

When attempting to catalog a tape, it appears that BE services drop, and the job goes into a recovered status. Inventory jobs appear to complete successfully though.

If I want to perform a test restore from tape, the process, from what I understand, is:

  1. Inventory the device
  2. Catalog the media
  3. Insert additional media if requested
  4. Perform restore

Is there a step that is being skipped? Any idea why services always drop in the middle of a job?

Thanks in advance,

Jordan

problem with CASO and MMS

I need a solution

Hi all,

I have a problem created with one of the BE support that is he deleted the MMS from the CAS server consol without disabling the communication between the CAS and the MMS which caused the MMS not to be controlled by the CAS any more and no link between them

I tried to repair both CAS and MMS with no success and also tried to manage MMS locally and then revert back to centralised also no success.

I think the problem with the BEDB itself but unfortunately I don't have any backup or dump for it

I have this event ID 33152 shown continuesly on CAS server

Adamm Database Event: Handle Failure!
Error = ERROR_INVALID_HANDLE
Server = "CESUDB04"
Active Node = ""
Instance = ""
Database = "BEDB"
Connection String = "DRIVER=SQL Server;SERVER=CESUDB04;DATABASE=BEDB;App=BEWS PVL"

This is urgent issue and your fast response is highly appreciated.

Thanks

Tape library sharing between NetApp NAS and media server

I need a solution

I am working on a backup topology design. The customer has one NetApp SAN/NAS with FC tape out port, and one HP MSL tape library with two FC LTO5 drives. They will have a BE 2010 or BE 2012 media server with FC port, and several Hyper-V with FC ports. All FC ports connects to the SAN switch.

The question is that is it possible to use one tape library to backup NAS using NDMP, as well backup those Hyper-V LAN-free? If yes, what license do they need? I know if using NBU, they just  need a SSO. How about for BE? Any difference if use BE 2010 or BE 2012?

Thanks,

Henry

I need a solution

Hi,

I am having a strange behaviour in BE2012 where the job activity page does not show anything but the backup duplicate to tape is running on the background?

I can see the job rate: and the bytes going up but everything else seem to be missing?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Hello

We are using BE2012 and we have netapp.

2 different library connected to directly on netapp

1 tape library connected to switch which is directly pointing to BE2012 server.

The tape drive shows as stanalone for one of the library connected on netapp.

Please suggest after reviewing the screenshot and at this moment the library which directly pointing to BE2012 server is disconnected and then we have take the screenshot.

Files in System32 and Winsxs folders not backing up

I need a solution

Hello everyone,

I have recently installed Backup Exec (BE) 2010 R3 on a server that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard x64, we also have another server running BE 2010 R3. The older server is very old and slow and is there just as a spare in case of hardware failure, however, we did used to use it as our main backup server.

Since I started running backups on the new server I found that the backups are smaller than they were when compared to the old backups. I have investigated this and found that the bulk of the files that make up this difference are in the System32 and Winsxs folders. I have compared the amount of data backed up on the new backup job with the amount that was being backed up on the old server and it varies from server to server, but the difference between the backup sizes can be around 20gb.

In a way this is good as it is saving me time on my backups, but I am little concerned as to why BE is doing this, plus I am a little concerned that if it comes to doing a restore that I may not be able to do so properly. As far as I can see every single option on the backup job on the new installation is exactly the same as the old one, so I am not too sure why there is a difference!

Can anyone explain to me why BE is doing this, and also, is it a problem, should I be concerned about it?

V-Ray edition and installation on HyperV HOST

I need a solution

Hi,

I have just imported the V-Ray licenses into my Backup Exec 2012 media server. I have installed the VHD Mounter since it's a Windows 2008 std server.

How can I continue the installation? I don't see any HyperV agents anywhere....

Attached are a file with all the licensed products for this media server.

Hope anyone can guide me in this for I can't see any changes on the media server after intalling the license file that was shipped when we bought the product.

Very long restore

I need a solution

Hello,

I am using Backup Exec 12.5 with backup to disk as media. When I start a restore of data from a fileserver the job starts and states in the Job Setup the media required to complete the restore. But when I look at the devices tab it seems that Backup Exec goes through all the Media files (4 GB in size) from the first one indicated to be required until the last one indicated to be required.

When restoring data for another server, using another "device" (backup to disk location) which also has multiple media files does not seem to scan all the media files, but only the ones required.

Kind regards

Bas

Bare metal restore with Oracle client

I need a solution

We are currently testing our backup strategy with Symantec and so far so good.

Since last week I have been trying to do a bare metal restore of an oracle server. this is what I did so far:

  • Convert original machine to Virtual machine Point in Time.
  • Rename server + assign new IP + new SID
  • remove oracle broken database instance (oradim -delete)
  • Create new instance with same SID (oradim -new)
  • generate new password file (orapwd file=path\pwdsid.ora password=<password>)
  • change DBID to the original (rman: SETDBID<dbid ID>)
  • Reconfigure backup exec agent utility, restore trust, reconfigure oracle instance and database access.
  • Add 'new' virtual server to backup exec interface and configure password
  • create restore job in old 'broken' server that uses last available control file.
  • restore to a different Oracle server, with the server name, correct log on account and database log on account.

when I execute this job i get the RMAN error:

RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-03002: failure of restore command at 11/18/2013 14:47:45 ORA-27191: sbtinfo2 returned an error

when I enable server side debugging this is the last entry i see in my log:

to clarify, mlinetstsvr02 is the original server that is broken. mlinetstsvr02-vm is the new machine.

Does anybody have any idea how I can resolve this? Or is there a good step by step guide to do this?
I used the administrators guide but this is not that clear imho.
