Hello Everyone.

We have been using BE 2010 for years to backup our 6 servers. We have 1 media server and the others have various agents. We use B2D to a NAS for our backup device.

This setup has been somewhat unreliable. At least once a month (and sometimes once a week) the device will be unavailable in BE even though it is still on and still accessable, etc.

My idea is to redo this setup and change the NAS to an iSCSI Device. It's a Lenovo px12-450r NAS. It has 24 TB of storage space

I understand that typically an iSCSI device can only be used with one server.

So, does this mean that if I connect it to our BE Media server that all of the backup traffic from the other servers will pass through the Media Server?

I thought about connecting the iSCSI Device and all of the servers to a secondary physical network as well to separate the backup traffic from our normal network. I'm just not sure if this is the right way to configure this. I have not had any luck finding information about this topic.

I think we can create LUNs for each server and attach the iSCSI device to each server individually. I'd like to avoid doing it this way though if possible because it would be a hassle to make adjustments to the sizes/quantity of the LUNs afterwards.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I just upgraded from BE2010 to 2014 last week, in-place upgrade on a Win2008R2 machine.  The upgrade did admirable work understanding and including all the backup jobs, and things have been going reasonably well, particularly our weekend Full backups, which went very well.

However, our daily differential jobs have a major problem:  The Disk job runs fine, but the Duplicate-to-Tape jobs hang at 0 Bytes, list themselves as "Running", but do not actually engage the tape drives.  The Job Activity window has no information, save for the elapsed time.  And the jobs produce no Alerts, and never seem to fail.  And while they are sitting in the Active state, they prevent any other jobs from running. They *definitely* have blank tapes waiting for them, but those tapes are not pulled & written to.

How can I find more information about what is going on so that we can get these jobs working?  The debugger is only so useful to a layperson like myself.

What is happening here?  5 hours of hang time is insane.  The data retention policy for the disk data is adequate and should mean that the data is still present on the disk.  Why is it not going to tape?  All these jobs worked perfectly with BE2010.

In the example below the original backup is of Oracle databases, but this 0Byte-Active-Duplicate-to-Tape problem is happening with all my Differential jobs (svrs, vms, dbs, etc.)

Hi all,

my customer has a problem with his deduplication storage. It won't come up again reporting an error in a TLOG file.

Of course I filed a case with symantec the day the problem occured but although I send them mails on a daily basis they didn't even bother calling me back at the agreed time. So my customer has no backup for nearly a week. How's that for support?

Anyway I need a solution quickly now, so I'm hoping there's anybody out there who had a similar problem!

Software compression  affects the GRT performance. ( I know it , I'm using hardware compression)
Encryption affects the GRT performance  even if hardware encryption . ( : - ,,,
This answer is very strange for me.
His answer meant  "Hardware compression dose not affects the GRT performance but hardware encryption affects  the GRT performance"

Hi guys,

as i'm not so experienced with BE 2014 i need a little help about media set configuring.

I'm using BE2014 with HP tape library for almost 6 months and i noticed that "Keep data for 4 weeks" is not 28 days.
For example: 

Allocated Date:                20.12.2014 10:57:09

Owerwrite protected until: 23.01.2015 18:00:30

So, if i reconfigure "Keep data for 4 weeks" media set from 4 weeks to 28 days, what is going to happen with tapes (media alredy used) in that media set.

I'm afraid if i do that, whether it change Allocated date ?  Or not ?

Salve,

sono giorni ormai che ho un problema con Backup Exec. 2012 (Rel 14 - built 1798 64bit) su macchia W2008 R2

e che mi sta facendo impazzire!!!

Su alcuni backup (non tutti perchè altri sono ok) ho questo tipo di errore:

Processo completato: giovedì xx gennaio XXXX  a 14:01:18
Stato: Non riuscito
Errore finale: 0xe000fe30 - Si è verificato un errore di comunicazione.
Categoria errore finale: Errori di server
Per ulteriori informazioni su questo errore fare riferimento al collegamento V-79-57344-65072

Ho controllato tutto anche con riparazione del database. Le porte aperte sul server e sui client sono a posto,

patch verificate ecc. Cosa fare? Questo tipo di errore è emerso dopo alcuni aggiornamenti di

windows che mi hanno anche bloccato il database poi ripartito dopo il reboot ulteriore della macchina.

L'intervallo delle porte dinamiche TCP sono attivate (1025 ... 65535) , lato client sembra ok ....

Cosa posso fare? Soluzioni?

Hi,

Im trying to troubleshoot a random issue that is happening. The difficulty is that the issue is not consistent. 

We have 3 jobs setup to backup 3 server, and it will fail with the following error.  Now this can happen randomly with either Job1,Job2,Job3

Or Job1 will succed, Job2 will fail, Job3 will succed, or another night it will be Job1 Fail, Job2 Success,Job3 Success

Basiscally the jobs fail with the following error. 

Backup-"JOB NAME"An unknown error occurred on device "TAPE DEVICE".
V-79-57344-34029 - A hardware error occurred.

An unknown error occurred on device "TAPE DEVICE".
V-79-57344-34030 - An invalid command was sent to the storage device.

The storage device may no longer be accessible to the operating system. Review the event logs for more information.

Now this has been happending few days.  Some of the things I have tried so far are

1) Ran the HP LLT Tools - passed

2) Tried a new job to test, will fail randomly if either started manually or scheduled

3) The jobs that we already have defined, will randomly fail, either started manually or scheduled

4) Happens to different physical Tapes

5) When I try to go to the links for the V- errors the pages come up cannot find page

6) Windows Event Logs do not show anything in the time period of the jobs

Specs are as follow

Backup Exec 2014 Small Business Edition with Service Pack 2

Windows Server 2008 R2 with all updates

HP Proliant ML350 Gen 9 with HP H240 HBA card on a HP Ultrium 1760 LTO-4 Tape Drive with Vsphere ESXI 5.5 with update 2 and latest patches.

Now this was working prior to the hardware upgrade above this tape drive was running similar setup of

Backup Exec 2014 Small Business Edition with Service Pack 2

Windows Server 2008 R2 with all updates

HP ProLiant DL380 G6 with HP P212 HBA card on a HP Ultrium 1760 LTO-4 Tape Drive with Vsphere ESXI 5.5 with update 2 and latest patches.

I'm working on a project for a client who has a win 2003 server. For lots of really unbelievable reasons, my client needs to restore data from a tape, but the client only knows that the backup program used then was Veritas Backup Exec. 

My question - providing the tapes are still good, the hardware is still good, what are the chances that BE 2014 will be able to read the tapes?

My fIles backup plan is :-

Full backup in Tape on Saturday

and Incremental in NAS keep 1 Week from Monday to Friday.

Just checked NAS storage, it haven't delete/overwrite file bkf over 2 weeks

Any idea to fix it ? I don't want my NAS storage FULL.

Hi all, I have a high level technical question for you re BE2014, Exch2013 and its inbuilt archiving.

I have been asked to suggest a retention policy for our new Exch env. I have gone back to the buiness and asked for retention times/rpo/rtos etc, but in the meantime I'd like to get a better understanding of how these products should hang together.

• My Backup env is BE2014 with Exch agents on W2K12R2, with 1TB of storage and then 2xLTO6, all HP kit.
• The Exchange is W2k12R2 with Exch2013 Update 7, and will utilise the inbuilt archiving utility.
• The Exch data is about 15TB, each Exch Storage Group is under 400GB. So I plan to use the 1TB storage as a staging area and to utilise in the event of restore.

The way I would see it working is as follows;

• Backup Exchange DBs, with a standard 5 day GFS, with a minimal retention period, say a month.
• Then archive all email after a month and run a seperate backup of the archived items, that would run every week, with a much longer retention period that the buiness specifies (eg 7 year).

Does this sound correct? Or is their benefits from running both backups for the 7 year retention periods?

Hi All,

we are currently still on 2010BE.

Now we have the first BE 2012 installed. And Im confused now about job creating.

We have a Fullbackup job running every friday at 23:00 and except the first friday in the month. On the first friday in the moth i run an offiste backup.

And 2 times every day we run inc jobs.

On BE2010 it was pretty simple to create such timeschedule. Just select the the repetetive days in a kind of spreadsheet. But I can't find it on BE2012.

Dears

I am getting below error when trying to start the backup of Oracle database.

Oracle Database is 11g in stalled on Windows Server 2008 R2  and Backup Server is Backup Exec 2010 (SP 1) installed on Windows Server 2003 32 bit.

I pushed the agent without any problem but when I am trying to confiugre the agent the ORCL instance was not saving up in the Oracle tab,
So I started to uninstall andn reinstall the agent but in between it gaves me error that no permission to some of the Keys under HKLM-Software-Symantec.

Then I gave a full permission for my domain administrator account for the key and subkeys under the HKLM-Software-Symantec. Then I was successfully able to add the oracle instance. I also configured the backup job selecting the database and required log file. When I run a test-job it went successfully.

But when I start the job it gaves me the below error.

The Backup Exec Oracle Agent encountered a write error.. If the disk is write protected, database scripts for the job cannot be created. Make sure that the disk is not write-protected.

Please let me know any solution for this error. Is this anything realted to permission issue. Do I need to reinstall the agent again.
Is there any compatability issues with the software versions.

My customer is running Backup Exec 2010 Small Business Suite and is remotely backing up a server running SQL 2008. He is looking to add another server that will be running SQL 2014.

My questions is, "Can Backup Exec 2010 remotely backup a server running Windows Server 2012/SQL Server 2014?".

If the answer is yes, then "Do I need to have a particular hotfix/patch installed?"

I have BE2104 V-Ray lisence.

BE2014 is installed in virtual server.... and yes, I know this is not recommeded by Symantec, but I anyway have this kind of setup.

I keep getting following error message when I do backup of server with MS SQL database:
"Backup- <server>.<domain>.local\BKUPEXEC
V-79-40960-37912 - Database BE_DLO is offline, loading, or in the standby state.  Only online databases can be backed up."

BE_DLO is located inside BKUPEXEC instance which is up and running.

I do not have DLO option installed on server anymore (= in Programs and features).
I have had DLO7.5 installed earlier, but it has been removed and is not there anymore.
I guess BE_DLO is there because I have earlier had BE2010 which has then been upgraded to BE2010R3 and finally to BE2014.

How can I get rid of this "BE_DLO" ?

I have increased the append period on a tape catridge when the OP has expired. Can we do it if the storage is still available ?

I see below screen on the storage backup sets. Can we restore data from the expired backup set. is it something to worry ?

We have a Symantec licences as the following:

SYMC BACKUP EXEC 2014 SERVER WIN PER SERVER BNDL STD LIC EXPRESS BAND S BASIC 
SYMC BACKUP EXEC 2014 AGENT FOR VMWARE AND HYPER-V WIN PER HOST SERVER BNDL STD LIC EXPRESS BAND S BASIC 
SYMC BACKUP EXEC 2014 AGENT FOR APPLICATIONS AND DATABASES WIN PER SERVER BNDL STD LIC EXPRESS BAND S BASIC 

We want to backup virtual machines data on: 

• NAS px6-300d 18To
• DELL autoloader PV TL1000 drive with LTO6 drives 

The virtual machines are connected with Giga bytes ports, backup server also and the switch is a Gigabytes HP switch.

The problem is that the transfer rate of any VM (to NAS or to TL1000) is always 120Mb/min max!!!

Editing the bloc, buffer size and compression didn't increase this rate.

This is too slow and we should have at least 800Mb/s approximatively.

I generate a ticket yesterday (case number 08089461) but still not have any reply!!!

Can you please advise ASAP?
