I need a solution

Hi, our Backup Exec server is BE 2014 SP1 on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Standard. We use SDR to restore all the clients and it works fine so far. My question is:

Is it possible to restore Backup Exec server by using SDR? If yes, any best practice or notes that we need to follow? Thanks in advance.

reading/import Backup Exec 2010-Tapes with Backup Exec 2014

I need a solution

Hi,

we still use BE2010 with LTO4-Tapes in the moment and we try to upgrade this environment to BE2014 and LTO6.

I know LTO6 Drives are been able to (only) read LTO4 Tapes, but what is the best practice to restore data made by the combination BE2010 and LTO4 with the new BE2014-solution?

And is this may also possible with Tapes created with BE2012?

Thanks and regards

Eric

Problem converting MMS to LMS in BUE2014

I need a solution

Hi everyone,

Apologise to those who may have read one of my previous articles about this - unfortunately I've logged with Symantec tech support but for some reason the issue on our servers seems to be unique and as yet unresolved.  Let me explain...

I have 1 x virtual server running BUE 2014 with the CASO option installed.

We also have 2 x MMS BUE 2014 servers configured to use the above server.

Our backup process is designed as follows:

Backup our virtual and physical servers to one of the MMS servers.  We'll then duplicate the jobs to the second MMS server (which incidently is located at another office).  There's also a step required to push the data to tape once per week also but I'll leave that for another day.

The problem I'm having is simple.  Despite following the KB articles I'm unable to convert an MMS (either of them) into an LMS.  The reason I want to convert an MMS to an LMS is that I'm testing what would happen if we lost our head office (and thus the CAS server).  To simulate a failure I'm switching off the CASO server.  The problem with following the KB article is that after my CASO server is not detected I'm prompted to select a SQL instance - however there is no option to choose a SQL server, just an OK button and then we're back to square one.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  I've uninstalled and re-install BUE across the whole environment several times.  The only thing I've not done is to uninstall the OS and start from scratch.

Thanks,

Danny

I need a solution

Hi everyone

So I discovered a problem with our BackupExec12 setup, installed on Windows Server 2008 and has remote agent installed on all our other servers running 2008 and 2008 R2.

Having needed to perform a file restore (first one since I started the job) i kept getting authentication errors, so I reset the backupexec user password in our domain controller and restarted the backupexec services which accepted it and came backup ok.

The problem I'm getting is when I try a resource credential test/ or actually try running the restore I get the following errors:

"The data was not able to be validated"

any ideas?

Server 2008 DC/Exchange Server Converted VM Results in Black Screen with Mouse Cursor Just Before Logon

I need a solution

We have a server 2008 machine which is a DC and running Exchange (I'm aware this is poor practice, it's inherited). I've been backing it up using Backup Exec 2014 SP1. I recently attempted a VM conversion from a point in time, which ran successfully. The resulting VM will not allow me to log in, however. The server boots into Windows, but the logon screen never comes up. It shows a black screen, and a mouse cursor is the only indication that it's doing anything at all. After some time, the Windows screen saver will kick in, indicating that something is happening in the background. I can also get the StickyKeys dialog up by hitting Shift five times.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

—Brian

Backup Exec 2014 GUI Bugs?

I need a solution

I have been noticing a few bugs in the GUI recently.  I am running Backup Exec 2014 SP2 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Server x64.

BE_List_1.PNG

As you can see by the screnshot above, the Job Monitor screen shows this is a "Full" backup method.  This is not true, this is an Incremental Backup Job..  If I right click on the job and select "View Job Log"

BE_Job_Log.PNG

it shows it is an "Incremental" Job Backup Method.  This is extremely confusing when I am trying to figure out why a full backup is running on a Incremental day, as well as why the job is way smaller then the full back job normally is.  I have more examples which I have not taken screenshots of yet.  Like a backup will be running, an if I view the Collapsed Job Name within Job monitor, it shows the storage as a B2D Pool, but if I expand the view, it updates to show Robotic Library 0001.  Collapse it again, and it goes back to showing the B2D pool.  This is also very confusing because the job will show it is a "Duplicate" job duplicating to tape, but the storage is a B2D Pool.  So it looks like it is Duplicating back to itself.  But if you view the job lob, it shows which tape it is writing to in the Robotic Library 0001.

is anyone else currently experiancing this GUI issues?  Other then asking on the forum, should I open a case with Symantec or are they already aware of these issues?

Add date to Log files or reports

I need a solution

Hello tech gurus,

This is my first question so please be gentile  :)

I have to upload either the backup summary report or log files daily as part of our SOX compliance.  I have the results emailed to me every morning and this works fine.  But it is a pain to have to save every file and rename them with the date then upload.  Is it possible to automatically add the date to the file name?

Thanks in advance for any help you cangive me.

Full Backups/Incremental vs. Full Backups/Differential Backup Scenarios

I need a solution

Our situation:

We are running BE 2010 on Win 2003 server.  We have LT05 and LT04 tape drives.

We have a file server that contains approximately 900gbs of data, for which we do weekly full backups and daily incremental backups.  The incremental backup size averages between 2 and 4gb of data per backup.  Due to the size of the full backup I am having to change tapes more freqently.   I am considering going to a monthly Full backup and daily differential backup scheme.  Since differential backups are cummulative, would my final differential backup of the month be between 40 and 80 gbs (assuming 20 differentials between full backups)?

From what I have read, it seems like a combination of monthly full backup and daily differential backups is a good combination from a restore point of view.

I welcome and solicit your comments.  I guess my ultimate goal in changing the backup scheme is to reduce the number of tapes I am using throughout the month.  I have read the blog from PKH on the Pros and Cons of Various Backup Schemes.

thanks,

Linda

Backup to disk, duplicate to disk then duplicate to tape

I need a solution

Hi there,

Using BUE2014 I'd like to create a job that backs data to a deduplication disk store on server A and then duplicate to another dedupe store on server B automaitcally, eg, when the backup job finishes.  This I'm fine with.  My query is with the next step as what I'm wanting to do is than add a third stage that copies the full backups to tape (again automatically) after the dedupe to dedupe storage stage has ran - only I'd like the source of the data to be server A and not server B.  The reason is that server B is off site whereas the tape library is connected to server A - hence I'll end up pulling more data across my WAN links.

If I opt to backup to tape before duplicating the data to server B I'm presuming the source for the dedupe to server B will be the tape?

Aside from creating a static scheduled job, I cannot see a way of doing this.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Source VM --> backup to Server A (site A) -> duplicate to Server B (site B) -> backup the full backup from Server A to tape (Site A)

Thanks in advance :-)

Danny

we have windows server 2012 r2 standard and symantec 2014,  all was updated.

we have, also, echange 2010 with 4 database in DAG.

we have problem with backup one database, all other database backups done's with success.

error looks like:

Final error: 0xe000848c - Unable to attach to a resource. Ensure that the selected resource exists and is online, and then try again. If the server or resource no longer exists, remove it from the selections.

As far as I understand, the decisions that have in best practice,  not suitable for me, since the other databases are backups.

what do in this case?

Only Backup-to-disc with Backup-Exec 2014 SP2

I need a solution

Hi,

we are running Backup Exec 2014 SP2 on a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Server. On this server 2 backup-systems are running. One is Backup Exec and the other one is Data Protection Manager 2010 (DPM). The DPM is doing synchronisations and restore points during the week and ALL Backup-to-tape jobs during the weekend. Backup Exec is only used for Backup-to-disc jobs of our Exchange-Server twice a day from Monday till Friday. The tape-device is a HP Autoloader. The loader uses a current HP-driver.

Using Backup Exec 2012 both jobs worked fine. Even after a reboot Backup Exec did not connect to the Autoloader.

After the Update to 2014 after each reboot Backup Exec connects to the Autoloader. For this reason DPM cannot run the backup-to-tape job. DPM shows the Autoloader as offline.

Symantec-Support is not able to find a solution. Their last suggestion was to set the Autoloader to disabled and inactive. But we already tried that and it didn't work. The last workaround was to stop all Backup Exec services, set them to disabled and reboot the server. In this situation DPM could connect to the autoloader and the backup-to-tape jobs ran. Later we had to set the Backup-Exec services to enabled and reboot the server again to run the backup-to-disc jobs during the week.

We need a configuration for Backup exec which ensures that Backup Exec does not search for tape drives even after a reboot of the whole server.

Does anybody here has an idea?

Thanks in advance.

How to manualy start a planed Job at different time

I need a solution

I have some planed jobs in Backup Exec 2014. Sometimes I need to start one of the planed jobs manualy.

But I want to start the jobs manualy at a special time.

In older Backup Exec Version there was an option to set manualy start for a special time. In 2012 or 2014 there seems to be no option.

BE2014 server shows up twice after migration

After migration from be2012 to be2014, we find the same server twice on the MMS, once with fqdn, once without (mms_shows_server.jpg). This server is backuped by the CAS, where you only find the server once without fqdn (cas_shows_server.jpg) . Trying to restore to this server on the MMS, doesn't show up any possible selection, neither from the server with fqdn (mms_selection_fqdn.jpg), nor from the server (mms_selection_1.jpg) . If you restore from the CAS, you see that every drive is selected for possible restore (cas_selection.jpg).

With configuration like:

Storage and media database location=CAS

keep the catalogs on = CAS

we assume the server to appear only once.

Do you have to get rid of duplicates between CAS & MMS manually?

Backups running slower

We are running Backup Exec 2012 on Server 2008 R2.  We backup to dedupe storage and then duplicate to tape.  Recently I noticed that my backups/duplicates are taking longer to run.  I finally had some time to graph this out and it looks like starting on 12/8/14 is when this first took place.  Below is a bar graph of my data transfer rates for my duplicate to tape jobs that show the reduced rate.

DataTransferRate.PNG

The only thing that I can correlate with that date is we did have a power outage and that server shutdown unexpectedly.  Since then the server/storage/tape library has been rebooted several times, I updated all drivers/firmware via the HP Service Pack disk, made sure I wasnt backing up more data, and don't see any errors that correlate.  Any idea why all of a sudden my job rate would drop off like that?
