Need help with MS Exchange Agent

I need a solution

Greetings,

I am a newbie here and my very first post regarding to Symantec Backup Exec product.  We're currently using Commvault as our enterprise backup solution.  We're looking at different product to evaluate and perhaps switching to that product.  Symantec Backup Exec 2014 is fist on my list to evaluate, especially for MS Exchange.

I have downloaded and installed BE 2014 trial version.  During this install, I did not see anything for Microsoft Exchange product, such as an agent of any kind.  Am I missing something?  I did see MS Agent, which I installed it and was able to fully utilized that, but I can't seem to find the Exchange agent on Symantec website or on the eval distribution media.

Where do I find the MS Exchange agent and how do I install this?  I am new to this product - Help!!

Thank you,

Rick

Do I need a Hyper-V agent license to restore?

I need a solution

We're planning to deploy Backup Exec to our enviroment, we've 2 Hyper-V server (Server A and B) which will replicate VM guest each other. We're going to purchase 1 backup server license and 1 Hyper-V agent license to backup the one of Hyper-V server (Server A) and active VM guest.

I'd like to know that, if the Hyper-V server (Server A) is down, can I restore the backedup VM guest to another Hyper-V server (Server B) with only 1 hyper-v agent license?

I need a solution

Backup-job of a w2012 file-server with DFS fails at weekend only with "E000FF16: the shadow copy resource is not responding, backup set canceled" after about 24h. the daily-job (settings are the same, just no verify) works fine. This weekend tried without verify, but result just the same, only 3h earlier. What also popped up, the performance went down from daily around 2100 MB/sec to 1200 MB/sec. Assuming that during the week more users are online during backup than on weekend, this is not very logic to me.

A second job running parallel, backing up all the servers performs without any problems, with quite similar performance in every job.

Switching from Powervault to Single tape drive

I need a solution

Since switching to the single tape drive runing backups are different now. It wants a new tape everytime a job is ran. Far as I know everything is set to over write but that must not be the case. What do I need to change on my jobs so that it doesn't eject the tape and overwrites the data as each job runs? This is Backup Exec 2012 14.0 1798

Each job is set to Append to media, overwrite if no apendable media is availabe. On media over write protection level I have Partial - protect only allocated media selected. Nothing else is checked.

Support for BackupExec 2012 Charity NFR license

I need a solution

Hi,

I am struggling to get an answer to a licensing query and have been given a number of different answers but none of them concise and all of them at odds with the last.

We have a Charity (from TT EXchange / CTX (as was)) NFR license for Backup Exec 2012

Howerver this comes with no support and no way to upgrade. (the upgrade not being a great issue)

Can anyone advise if it is possible to retro purchase support for the NFR license.

The price of the software was great however it is a real problem not being able to get support when there are issues.

Any ideas / pointers in the right direction would be greatly received.

thanks

Matthew

Best practices in backup environment?

I need a solution

Hello all,

I work for a SMB of about 30 people with a rather simple (but convoluted, I think) server environment. I took over from a previous admin who did the bare minimum of work, mostly remotely, so there are a few things I'm concerned about when it comes to Backup Exec. First, here is what we are working with -

1 (one) - Server 2008 R2 running Hyper-V

  • (Virtual) Server 2003 Domain Controller with all FSMO roles.
  • (Virtual) Server 2008 R2 Domain Controller with RDP License Server and all user home folders.
  • (Virtual) Server 2008 R2 running monitoring software (Spector CNE).

1 (one) - Server 2008 R2 running Exchange 2010, as well as Backup Exec 2010 R2 (ver. 13.0). The server HDD config is in RAID 1+0 (4x 3 TB hard drives), so luckily we haven't had any major issues.

4 (four) - Server 2008 R2 acting as RDP servers for employees to log in to and do their work on.

My first concern is that Backup Exec is on the Exchange server. The main backup job for Exchange even writes to the same drive the Exchange databse exists on. Duplicate backups write to two external hard drives, alternating weekly. The two domain controllers are backed up with the same method as well. We used to have two Hyper-V machines, but one recently crashed and is better off decomissioned. Instead, I have ordered a new server, and would like to have this setup -

1 (one) - Server 2008 R2 running Hyper-V.

  • (Virtual) Server 2008 R2 Domain Controller with PDC, Schema, Domain Name roles. Server will also have WSUS Role.
  • (Virtual) Server 2008 R2 Domain Controller with RiD and IM roles. Server will also have RDP Licensing Role.
  • (Virtual) Server 2008 R2 File server (for Profile folders, share drive, email archives, etc).

1 (one) - Server 2008 R2 running Symantec Backup Exec. Will backup locally as well as to external drives.

1 (one) - Server 2008 R2 running Exchange 2010.

As far as a backup strategy, the backup server would take backups of each DC, the File Server, and Exchange. The RDP servers don't matter as far as backing up goes, I'm really just wanting to make sure Exchange is completely backed up, as well as everything on the file server. As our last virtual server failed, I've learned it's quite easy to keep pre-installed virtual machines and just add them to the domain/install roles needed if one crashes. Anyway, if you've read this far, thank you in advance. Probably more info than you guys needed, but my basic question is, is my proposed backup configuration a step in the right direction from what I'm working with? Was it bad to have Backup Exec running on our Exchange server to the same drive as the Exchange Database, or is there a purpose to that set up?

Again, thanks in advance!

Possible to use command line tools to automate SQL DB restores?

I need a solution

Hello,

I need to know if it's possible to backup/restore, using the powershell command line tools, a sql database.

The idea here is that we will be spinning up servers in AWS and then destroying them as needed.

Prior to destruction a full backup would be performed.

AWS then spins up the new server, while using PS to do all the initial conf stuff, uses PS to install the BE agent, then uses them to restore the database.

I THINK I've found commands on how to backup the server: New-BESqlDatabaseSelection Cmdlet  (or? Set-BEInitialFullBackupTask Cmdlet perhaps?)

I've found the command on how to install the agent: Install-BEWindowsAgentServer Cmdlet

I'm having problems finding commands on restoration of the SQL database, The only thing I've seen on restoration is: Submit-BEFileSystemRestoreJob Cmdlet, but that just appears to be for file servers.

Can anyone help?

BackupExec 2014 license didnt shown when to install license.

I need a solution

Hi,

i have install Backup Exec 2014 version 14.1.1786 into Windows Server 2012 R2. During the installation "add licenses", i have manually typed the license number and maintenance license. it were displayed correctly with quantity and expired date (maintenance). backup serial number didnt display end date.

and then, after clicking Next, in "Review Licenses", the option to select a product - "Select a Backup Exec Edition License to install on the computer", it only show "trial".

Even though i already entered the correct serial number, remove and input back, it still didnt show up. Only trial was available. When clicking "Next", it prompt out to say " You have not installed your backup exec license....etc....Do you want to select your licenses before continuing?"

Click yes doesnt bring any effect. no license shown in the box to allow me to select. so i thought i should proceed with trial first. Then i just finished up the installation, restart the backup exec server and run the option "Install Option and Licenses in this Backup Exec server". Still, no effect or changes, it is still not showing me license to select. or something that i can activate my product.

i try to run "Live Update" to check and its told me that product already updated.

When i run the Symantec Backup Exec Diagnostic, the BEDiag result shown that it found backup exec licenses information in the server. the serial number displayed correctly. However, my Backup Exec still displayed as Trial. Under the BE console > under Licensing and Maintenance Contracts; the maintenance contracts is displayed, but not backup exec license.

Now, its been a month, i have another one month to solve this before the Trial periods end. im just afraid that after trials end, my product cannot be used or my backup cannot run or will failed.

Is there any patch or service packs to fix this issue? from forum threads, i found that it is like BE is having this issue from previous version till now.

Anyone encounter this problem? Please advise. Thanks.

Files missing from backup

I need a solution

I am evaluating Backup Exec 2014 and I have encountered some serious issues with my backups – files are missing from the backup.  My initial backup of a full machine was missing over 20gb of data. In tracking down a reproducible case, I have narrowed it down to the following (again, this is just an example):

  • Create a Backup to Disk
  • Edit the selection to include several files in the c:\inetpub\custerr directory (namely 500.htm, 500-100.asp, and 500-13.htm)
  • After the backup completes, try to restore files from that backup. Note that “500-100.asp” is not present in the backup

If I turn on full logging, I see that 500-100.asp is also not included. It doesn’t matter what I include in the backup select, 500-100.asp is never included (this is true whether the backup is local or of a remote machine).

Again, this is just an example of almost 20gb worth of data that wasn’t backed up.

I am running this on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials with all patches applied, and all patches are applied to Backup Exec 2014. There is nothing in the “global exclude selections”

I'm sort of at a loss as to what to do next... this is a pretty vanilla installation so I don't know what could be special. On the other hand, its a pretty devastating bug to have not been found yet (a backup program that fails to backup).

Any thoughts?

Backup to disk jobs - number of images available

I need a solution

I currently have a job that backs up the Exchange databases to disk, a duplicate job then runs which copies the B2D to tape.

The backup to Disk job is holding 2 nights worth of the backups on the disk. Is there a way I can reduce this to only hold 1 night which gets overwritten the following day?

I've looked at all the options but dont seem to be able to find anything.

Many thanks!

Hallo,

I need a solution

We have Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 Rev. 2213 installed on Windows Server 2003 R2 with SQL jobs defined.
One of those jobs is performing full SQL backup (Backup entire database or filegroup), the other one backs up transaction log.
Database log file is growing and needs to be shrinked. Is there a way to shrink it through BE configuration or must I start Pre/Post command to accomplish this? If so, which command(s) and at which point in time?
Please advise.

Backup Exec 2010R3 Jobs Now failing with Error Code E0000602

I need a solution

Beginning on 1-14-15 BE daily backup jobs started to fail, although no hardware changes had been made to our enviroment, and no modifications made to the backup job.  As suggested in some of the forum threads I disabled BE services and ran CatRebuildIndex.exe, then restarted services, but the error persisted.  Then, also as suggested, I disabled BE services, renamed the Catalog folder to force the create of a new one, ran CatRebuildIndex.exe, then restarted services, but the error continues to persist. Does anyone have an idea of what is going on?  Oddly enough, the Saturday job has run successfully once during this period.
