I need a solution

Hi

We have some tapes that were backup using True Image Restoreon BE 2010.

I want to restore the data rom those tapes on another server that also got BE 2010  installed.

After placing those tapes in auto-loader of the second server and exute a Catalog opertaion on them,

Will i be able to see the True Image Restore information on the second server?

i.e  - when restoring thsoe tapes on the second server, on the selection list of the restore, will i see all the snapshots from each backup and in all snapshot i will be able to restore the entire set by chossing the latest snapshot and not only the files that were backup in the specific snapshot?

Thanks

Hi,

I have installed Symantec Backup Exec 2012 small business edition running on Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise edition. It was running fine all along and today morning i found an unusual message "QUERY FAILED" in storage tab which was kept on Backup Status(current media) to see the backup status.
I tried to come to the storage tab to see whether the cartridge is online, but it shows the message "QUERY FAILED". So I restarted the Backup exec service which failed to start and recorded the following message.

An exception occured starting remoting services for Backup Exec Management Service: System.ServiceModel.AddressAlreadyInUseException: There is already a listener on IP endpoint [::]:50104. Make sure that you are not trying to use this endpoint multiple times in your application and that there are no other applications listening on this endpoint. ---> System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted at System.Net.Sockets.Socket.DoBind(EndPoint endPointSnapshot, SocketAddress socketAddress) at System.Net.Sockets.Socket.Bind(EndPoint localEP) at System.ServiceModel.Channels.SocketConnectionListener.Listen() --- End of inner exception stack trace --- at BackupExec.Management.Server.RemotingManager.ActivateHosts() at BackupExec.Management.Server.ServerCommon.Start()

I stopped all the services and restarted , but when it started It was asking for username and password when entered says the credential/username is invalid, check whether backup exec server is running. SQL server is running, port 50104 shows LISTENING and doesn't have ESTABLISHED status; it has so many TIME_WAIT.
Nothing has been changed in the server. The backup exec server is running locally and backing up to tape which is connected to the server.

I need a solution

Hi,

I am running backup exec 2012 and I am having an issue where the licensing is being incorrectly reported by the Symantec Backup Exec License Assessment Tool Report. It has listed one of the servers 4 times under the Agent for Windows and which gives me a does not meet licensing requirements error:

Agent for Windows               N/A            7               8                  No, need 1 licenses

Which is not correct as one of the servers is listed 4 times under the Server/Device name.

Where can I look to try and rectify this?

No clustered Hyper-V VMs showing in selection list

I need a solution

Hi,

I have a copy of Backup Exec 2014 V-Ray Edition running on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Although it did work fine, I can no longer backup some of my clustered Hyper-V virtual machines. On both of my Hyper-V Server 2012 clusters, the backup selection is empty with no VMs showing. The backup job now fails with:

e000942a - Backup Exec did not find any resources to include in the backup. Check the backup selections for this job to make sure it includes resources that are available for backup.

I've updated Backup Exec to SP1 and have updated the agents, and I've tried rebooting the hosts and removing/reinstalling the agents but it doesn't help. I have a Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 cluster that backs up fine, and all other backup jobs (SQL, file etc) are also working fine.

From the backup selection window, I can see the vhd files, but nothing is showing under the HA Virtual Machine heading. If I browse to the individual hosts, then I can get a list of the files on the local drives, and the system account being used has full admin permissions. I've also tried adding the system account to the cluster permissions and as a Hyper-V administrator on the hosts.

I've run out of things to try now. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Windows Agent Required for Standalone File & Print Server

I need a solution

Hi,

I'm setting up a standalone file & print server, which will run Backup Exec 2014 with a tape library. As it's running Backup Exec on the server it's backing up, rather than a remote server, do I still require a Windows Agent license?

I've tried googling around, but can't get a definitive answr, and just seem to get the Windows Agent install requirements.

Thanks

Job History vs Job Log vs Catalog Retention

I need a solution

Hi,

Just a quick query really.

I currently have the following options set:

Job History 90 Days

Job Logs 30 Days

Truncate catalogs Unticked

I am trying to understand the implication of making changes to these settings.

At the moment if I view a job history which is older than 30 days, it only has the Job History tab so I know the settings are working.

As far as I know the Job Log is basically a more indepth version of Job History. (Is this right?)

What I am trying to understand is the impact of the truncate catalogs option. (I am fully aware I can regenerate the catalog from source media BTW!)

I am currently backing up to tape. If I need to restore there are currently two ways I look for data to restore:

I select the correct tape where I can see the Backup Sets tab and view the backup sets contained on the tape. If I click a backup set I can then view its contents.

The reverse way using the server I want to restore to where I can then search etc. I am assuming the catalogs are what is being searched if I select search but if I also manually browse..

If I set the catalogs to truncate over say 90 days what exactly do I lose?

Does BE remove all references to what is on the tapes completely... as in no backup set and no contents, or is it just the contents that disappear?

Vmware Backup with GRT and Deduplication Storage

I need a solution

Hello Experts,

we are going back to Backup Exec ( Version 2014 ). Goal is to backup all virtual machines to Disk Storage and have a copy on tape.

The environment is:

Vcenter 5.5 with 2 ESX Hosts, HA Cluster, SAN over FC

HP Proliant DL380 G5 Server with Windows Server 2008 R2 and Fibre Chanel HBA that has Read Access to the SAN Volumes ( LUNS )

Backup Exec 2014 with latest SP1. We know that this Hardware is not recommendet for Deduplication, Performance is not important for the first step.

We have the deduplication option licensed and vmware agents + application agents for exchange, dc, sql

We checked the Administrator Guide, Deduplication Whitepaper ( Backup Exec 2014_Deduplication Option_White Paper ), Vmware Whitepaper ( backup_exec_2014-protecting_vmware )

Blueprints

Symantec Backup Exec 2014 Blueprints - VMware

Symantec Backup Exec 2014 Blueprints - Deduplication

So we think it should work like this

Three Group of vms to Backup

Windows VMs ( Agentless Backup ) with VM GRT enabled ( to restore file or folders if neccessary )

Windows VMs ( Agent Assisted Backup ) with GRT enabled for Applications ( for example Exchange Server, DC, SQL Server ), there is a Backup Exec Agent running to assist

Other VMs ( Linux or other OS ) without GRT enabled

All 3 Groups should be safed to one deduplicaton target in the night ( Backup Window 10:00 pm - 07:00 am )

Its local Storage ( SATA RAID ) in the Backup Server

On Weekend there should be a Full Backup of all 3 Groups

Mo-Fr Differential Backup

Over the Day the Backup data will be copied to Tape

Has anybody such a constellation in use ?

We start testing with a test vm ( windows Server 2008 R2 ) to the Deduplicaton Folder.

We have Problem to Backup the VMs to the Dedupliation folder if the GRT Option for VMs is enabled ( no Application GRT )

We always get the Error E0009579

Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) backups of Virtual Machine (VM) to deduplication storage fail with an error "0xe0009579 - Unable to copy the virtual machine disk using the VMware VixDiskLib"

V-79-57344-38721

There is an Article http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH168488

When we disable GRT it works but we cant restore file or folder from the vms.

The Article is for Backup Exec 2010 R3, we use Backup Exec 2014 with SP1.

If we do the job to a normal B2D Folder it is working with GRT for the VMs

We also found this

Verify of GRT VMWare backup fails with "Unable to copy the virtual machine disk using the VMware VixDiskLib" and reports that the VMDK is corrupt when targeted to Deduplication folder

Completed status: Failed Final error: 0xe0009578 - Unable to copy the virtual machine disk using the VMware VixDiskLib. Final error category: Resource Errors For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-38264

Its another Error, not the same, but the behavior is like we have.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH209472

So for what i am looking is a expert who has expierence with vmware backups and deduplication.

Best Regards

Backup jobs summary report, kB - or KB (aka KiB) ?

$

I need a solution

Apologies for the basic question - re: the figure of 'TotalDataSizeKBytes' in the Backup Exec jobs summary report... is this number in units of 1000 bytes, or units of 1024 bytes?

I ask, because I've just checked in NetBackup, and the figure in the NetBackup activity monitor screen for size of backup jobs is KB (i.e. units of 1024), as defined here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kibibyte

I ask, because in sizing calculations we usually work with GB and TB figures - which themselves are all based on 'kB' (i.e. units of 1000)...

...which means that if I divide NetBackup's 'KB' figure by 1000 to achieve MB etc,... then the resultant figure for MB is actually around 2.344% smaller than the 'kB / 1000' figure.

I'm wondering if the same is true for Backup Exec's  'TotalDataSizeKBytes' figure?

Thanks. D.

BE2010 R3 compatibility with VMWare ESXi5.5u2

I need a solution

Hi all, does anyone know if there are ompatibility issues with the above 2 products?

Previously had 3 hosts running ESX5.0 and a media server running BE2010R3 with the VMWare Agent installed and all my VM's were backing up fine no problems.

Recently upgraded my hosts to ESX5.5u2 and now my backups have stopped working, referencing an error similar to 'the vCenter Server reported an error with the virtual machines configuration.'

Can anyone advise if these two products should work and are compatible or does my BE installation need upgrading to 2012 SP3? and if so are there plans to release updates to make 2010 compatible with ESX5.5?

Thanks.

Client deduplication question

I need a solution

I need to make sure I understand the ramifications of client-side deduplication. That process is deduplicating before sending data over the wire for the backup, but it is not actually deduplicating the data on our EQ storage array, right? In other words, if our dedup device bites the dust, it only affects the backups and doesn't have any effect on the data sitting on the EQ?

For context - we recently got a Dell DR4100 and I'm using Backup Exec 2014 to back up our Windows server data to it using OST. The server data is all on the EQ. Before getting the DR4100, we would back up everything to tape - full over the weekend and diffs during the week. We keep our end of month full backups for one year and our end of year backups for several years.

I want to keep the backup schedule but have all backups go to dedup instead of tape. Every month, I'll duplicate the end of month full job to tape for our archives. So I'm just trying to make sure we don't lose a month's worth of work for several hundred users if the DR4100 has a problem right before the tape backup job.

Thanks.

Backup Exec 2014 and Symantec Enterprise Vault 10 server backup

I need a solution

Hi,

I have installed Backup Exec 2014 with SP1 on a Windows 2008R2 server that hosts Symantec Enterprise Vault 10.0.4. In Backup Exec, I see 'two' servers listed, the Windows server itself (drives C & D, System State, and SQL server, only the Microsoft supplied DBs, not any Vault DBs), as well as the Directory, which contains the Vault Site, the Vault SQL DBs, and the Vault Index locations.

I am looking for a way to backup both 'servers' together in 1 backup. I have an LTO5 tape drive that easily holds all of the data to be backed up.

As far as I can see, I can only backup each server separately.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike Rydzewski

I need a solution

We're running BE2014 SP1 on Server 2008 R2, Dell tape library, using Microsoft "Unknown Medium Changer" driver and Symantec IBM ULTRIUM-TD3 driver.

Upgraded from BE2012 a few weeks ago, we did not have the issue under 2012.

We run a full backup of multiple servers to a robotic library partition with 4 slots on weekends.  Each weekend one of the tapes is deleted & retired before the backup goes to use it, and the slot shows "empty" until an Inventory is run.  After the inventory, the backup can use the tape.

The Audit Log shows the DLM action -

10/11/2014 6:11:54 AM       BESSER\services                Device and Media          Media : A00104 has been moved from media set Scratch Media to media set Retired Media.

The media set overwrite protection is set to 1 week.

Any way around this issue?

Thanks!

BE 2014 & name resolution issues

I need a solution

I recently upgraded our BE 3600 appliance to 2014 SP1. I am having issues getting it to talk to all of my Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts. It acts like it's a name resolution issue, but I am able to ping the servers by name from the Backup Exec server. I am able to successfully connect to the servers in Backup Exec using their ip addresses.

What's puzzling is I have six Hyper-V hosts, all on the same subnet and configured the same. Backup Exec can talk to two of those by name. It needs the ip address for the other four.

The agent is installed and running on all of these servers.

If I try to remove one of these servers from Backup Exec (since it lets me add it to my list even though it cannot talk to it), I get errors such as ""Communication with the server timed out on the call 'DeleteResourceContainer'."

Any ideas?

BE 2014 Hangs on Snapshot

I need a solution

Hello everyone,

In advance, I checked the forums, but couldn't find a solution to the problem I seem to be having. Either that, or my google-fu is really bad today.

Anyways, we have a 2008 server that is running BE 2014 that was upgraded from an older version (2010, I believe). When we did the upgrade, everything went perfectly, but now the jobs just start to backup, get the information and then sit on "Snapshot Processing" and it will sit there for days on end till I have to cancel it, which also takes what seems to be a couple years.

Is there a way to fix or diagnose what the issue is exactly? Or has this already been answered and you know what's going on? I'm currently having to resort to another backup solution in the mean time to get the servers backed up as much as possible.

Thanks!

(If this is in the wrong place, I apologize. Moderators, can you please move this to the correct forum if it happens to be in the wrong spot? Thanks)

new cleaning tape - Backup Exec still thinks it's the old tape

I need a solution

My old cleaning tape expired. I removed it and inserted a new cleaning tape. Backup Exec seems to think the old tape is still in the slot. It still shows the old allocated date (March), still shows it's been used 50 times, etc. If I try to run a cleaning job it says "job failed with error: expired cleaning media."

1) I've tried to scan the slot, but that doesn't work.

2) I've seen advice saying "mark the slot as NOT cleaning media and run an inventory." However, when I mark it as not cleaning media, the option to inventory is still greyed out.

Any suggestions?

Yet another backup to tape speed issue

Dell Power Edge 1950 /server 2008 /20 gigs of ram /Broadcom BCM5708C NetXtreme II GigE With 1 port to san, 1 to Catalyst 4500 L3 switch /dedicated server for backup exec 2014. Used to be our old mailbox server.

Tape drive is a Quantum superloader 3 connected by SAS2

Equalogic PS4100X in raid 50 with dual switches for the storage network

Drive settings on the drive are currently:

  1. Hardware compression: Enabled
  2. Block size: 256KB
  3. Buffer size: 1MB
  4. Buffer count: 20
  5. High water count: 0
  6. Read single block mode: Disabled
  7. Write single block mode: Enabled
  8. Read SCSI pass-through mode: Disabled
  9. Write SCSI pass-through mode: Enabled

Currently Just the backup of our FP server is 3.4TB and currently takes 27 hours to complete on a full backup. Job Rate is 2,449 which roughly gives me a 41 MB/s transfer rate which unfortunately is below the minimum stream speed for the tape drive so the tape drive is going idle quite a bit which is probably the major cause of the jobs taking so long.

Current job is a cluster job backing up the HA vm's current file is a 1.3TB VHD that has been running for a number of hours.

Basically I am trying to figure out what I can do to speed this up. We Purchased the ADBO a few years ago but from what I have read lately it seems that offhost backup is fairly useless with virtual machines? And even then, would it make much of a difference with only one gigabit lead to the san.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
