Backup Exec 2014 & Tape Backup

I need a solution

Windows Storage Server 2012 64 bit, Backup Exec 2014

 

I have a Dell NAS Server that I plan to backup monthly to a Dell TL2000 Tape Backup System.  I am in the process of making the first backup.  The Dell NAS currently has about 24 TB of Data to be backuped up and the amount of data may eventually grow to around 30 TB.  Questions:

 

1.  How does Backup Exec handle data changes during the Backup Operation?  Almost all of the data being backup up is Symantec Images from PC's and Server's in the Network.  These PC's and Server's are scheduled to run Symantec Backups of their hard drives to the NAS during periods of time which do not overlap with each other.

 

2.  Does Backup Exec use something like Windows VSS during the Backup Operation?

 

3.  It appears that the current Backup Operation of ~24 TB of data may take around a week to complete.  Does this sound normal/typical?

 

4.  Any suggestion for a 'Best Practice' for backing up this very LARGE amount of data?

I need a solution

Hi,

is there a way to backup a NFS share directly to tape ?

The location is on a qnap nas, joined in domain.

I can't add it by servers - linux, or servers - fileserver.

Allready mapped it as networkdrive but also no soltution.

It was possible in backup exec 2012, so probably I'm trying it the wrong way.

Backup Exec 2014 - NAS to NAS Periodic Backups

Does Symantec Backup Exec 2014 have the capability to periodically sychronize (?) to NAS Servers?

 

I am considering buying a new NAS Server which is identical in capacity to my current NAS Server.  I have scheduled periodic file backups (from various PC's and Server's) to this existing NAS Server.  Does BackupExec 2014 have the configuration options to periodically copy files from the existing NAS Server to the new NAS Server (Including options like check if the file being copied is newer than the one on the destination Server and overwrite the older file).

BE2012 - BE2014 Upgrade: MS SQL Express -- Failed

Notes:

Upgrading from BE2012 to BE2014 

Environment:
Windows Server Enterprise - Service Pack 2
Memory 8 GB
System Type:  32-Bit

Installation:

Data Migration successful
Microsoft Report Viewer Redistributable 2010 -- Installation successful
Microsoft SQL Express  --  Installation failed.

From the Log file:

"E:\BE\WINNT\INSTALL\SQLExpress\SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe" /ACTION=Upgrade /Q /Hideconsole /SkipRules=RebootRequiredCheck /INSTANCENAME=BKUPEXEC /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS

I need a solution

I have sadly just been landed with this as Im covering for someone currently. The backups are currently failing with these errors, from a quick google it makes reference to exchange, we currently dont use exchange and all of this is backing up a drive with folders and lotus notes files/folders (again not much help here I dont know much about how lotus notes is configured) stored on there.

Restores Just Queue

Hi all,

 

I have BE2012 Service pack 4, which has been working pretty well up to now.

I have now found a problem when doing a test restore from my exchange backup, the backup just queues and never completes.

The data is on a deduplicated drive (hard disk)

In the system event logs i get: 

Adamm Mover Error: GetDriveInfo Failure!
Error = ERROR_INVALID_HANDLE
Drive = "Deduplication Drive:4"
    {E97BE95F-08D2-4D7F-BC3A-7F9CAEEF1E38}
Media = ""
    {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}
Read Mode: SingleBlock(0), ScsiPass(0)
Write Mode: SingleBlock(1), ScsiPass(1)

I can restore from another backup i.e my file server backup which is stored on the same drive.

I tried an inventory and catalog operation which failed also.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Deduplication Disk Read/Write Error

I need a solution

hi i have this problem when backing up two of my servers , both of servers are Windows server 2008 R2 with SQL Server

Issue: Backup to deduplication disk fail with :
Job ended: Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 9:10:28 PM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe00084ec - A backup storage read/write error has occurred.

If the storage is tape based, this is usually caused by dirty read/write heads in the tape drive.  Clean the tape drive, and then try the job again.  If the problem persists, try a different tape.  You may also need to check for problems with cables, termination, or other hardware issues.

If the storage is disk based, check that the storage subsystem is functioning properly.  Review any system logs or vendor specific logs associated with the storage to help determine the source of the problem.  You may also want to check any vendor specific documentation for troubleshooting recommendations.

Im runing Backup Exec 2014 HotFix 2 installed on Windows Server 2012 standard (VM ESXi 5.1)
ISCSI Disk From HP NAS Connected to ESXi then Connected to BE 2014 as Deduplication Disk

  • deleting Deduplication Disk And Recreating it is not solving problem ,
  • No NTFS or Disk Related error event on Client OS , Backup Exec Server or NAS Storage

Need comparison between BE 2014 and MS DPM

Hello!

My customer uses MS DPM and wants to know where Symantec Backup Exec can beat it. They use a lot of MS technologies: Windows Server, Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, AD, Hyper-V, clusters and so on. They use EMC DataDomain as data storage devices and HP tape libraries. 

Is there any comparison between modern versions these two products (BE vs DPM)?

How to perform a bare metal recovery

I'm trying to figure out if it is possible to perform a bare metal recovery with the system that a client has in place. They are currently using backup exec 2010 R3 to backup a 2003 domain controller. That domain controller crashed. They have spun up a VM to restore active directory to - unfortunately nobody has the active directory restore password. As a last ditch attempt to get this domain controller back online, we were considering performing a bare metal restore to the VM. HOwever, I am not really familiar on the exact process and what is required. They were were backing up the entire domain controller to a tape drive. What do I need to look for to see if it is even possible to perform a bare metal restore of this server? Is there a KB article that outlines exactly how to perform a BMR through BEX? Thank you.

Impossibile effettuare restore dati

Salve a tutti,

ho un problema nell'effettuare un restore di alcuni dati importanti.

Avevamo schedulato i backup dalla sorgente X su un disco S.

Dopo un po' di tempo abbiamo avuto un problema su quella sorgente X e abbiamo migrato i dati su una macchina Y.

Quindi quando tento di fare il restore non riesco perchè la risorsa non è più disponibile.

Ho provato a creare una macchina virtuale con stesso Ip e stesso nome macchina, ma con una cartella mappata come disco S.

Ma il sistema non riconosce il disco S mappato come un disco valido e non effettua il restore.

Sapete se c'è una soluzione a questo? Si può cambiare il percorso di destinazione?

Backup Exec 2014 SP1 Environment Check issue

Good morning,

I am planning on upgrading from Backup Exec 2012 SP4 to Backup Exec 2014 SP1.

After I ran the Environment Check, I got one 'Failed'.
The Microsoft SQL Server upgrade may fail because the account security identifiers (SIDs) of the SQL service group accounts created during the Backup Exec SQL instance installation cannot be mapped to the SIDs currently assigned to the SQL service group accounts

Can someone please point me to the correct article?

Backup mediante Bit de archivo Linux?

Hola amigos.

Tengo el siguiente inconveniente.
Necesito ejecutar Backups Diferenciales/Completos en Linux. Pero los backups mediante "Fecha de modificacion" no me sirven, ya que aveces copio archivos a los directorios y estos tienen una fecha anterior a la de la copia completa, y no se toman en cuenta en las copias diferenciales. Existe alguna forma de utilizar el Backup mediante Bit de archivo en Linux? U alguna otra alternativa?

BE 2010 True Image Restore vs. BE 2014 Point in Time Restore

Hi

We have been using BE 2010 for backup to tape over the last few years.

We had been using the BE 2010 True Image Restore (ADBO)  in order to restore the contens of directories to what they were at the time of any full or incremantal backup - this is critical for us.

Beofre i'm upgarding to BE 2014 - do i still need the True Image Restore in BE 2014 - or can i use the Point in Time restore for same result?

we use Full backup once for each of our projects, and Incremantel backup on daily basis for about 3 month (till that project ends).

Using True Image Restore in BE 2010  - i was able to open up the restore wizard, choosing the latest incremantal backup, and using latest incremantal backup, i was able to restore any one of the full/incremental backups since the job was created,

Will i able to do the same using the Point in Time restore in BE 2014?

Cancelling Waiting Backup Exec 2014 Jobs

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

Can somebody explain to me why we can't cancel jobs that are queued up but not yet active? It's extremely annoying and a waste of time to have to wait for jobs to become active before they can be cancelled. I'm just curious if there's some technical reason why this capability isn't available or what the reasoning is behind this decision. It's seems utterly absurd but I'm looking forward to being convinced otherwise.

Regarding licensing of BE 2014 Remote Agent for Windows - does BE license comes with one remote agent included?

If i have one media server and two remote clients that i need to backup, should i purchse the main BE license + 2 Remote agents or the main BE license +1 remote agent?

Schedule a full backup without intervals- BE 2014

I need a solution

Hi

Using BE 2014 - i want to create:

For the first week  - one full job for each day of the week

From the second week and on - one incrematel job for each day of the week.

Each day will have its own tapes.

When i configure the FULL jobs - i dont have an option to schduale the job to a specific time without hour/day/week/year interval.

I only have the options for spcific time with intervals, run now, no schduale.

I do have that option in the "One Time Backup" - but that way i can't configure the incremantal jobs for the second week and so on.

Am i missing something?
