I need a solution

Hello,

We are adding support for our network documentation tool, to be able to document BackupExec.

Using the cmdlet Get-BEDiskStorageDevice is it possible to get the UNC or local path information for disk based storage?

I see you can use this with the New-BEDiskStorageDevice cmdlet but can't see how to get the configured path for existig storage devices.

Regards,

David

VSS Frustration

I need a solution

Hello all,

I'm running a variety of Backup Exec software solutions and run into this problem with every version.

VSS Writer errors -

I have tried changing the options for Advanced file open portion of the backup and have found I see better results with

Use Snapshot Technology - Automatically select snapshot technology - Process logical volumes for backup one at a time and ENable checkpoint restart.

However I still periodically get Errors Listed below:

V-79-57344-65233 - Snapshot Technology: Initialization failure on: "\\CMI1730\System?State". Snapshot technology used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). Snapshot technology error (0xE000FED1): A failure occurred querying the Writer status. Check the Windows Event Viewer for details. WHen it fails it seams to fail for weeks at a time.

I've even written a script to reset the All the Writers before the backup job runs as a pre command for the backup job I have running.

I have verified the Writer status is good before the snapshot proccessing begins.

BU Exec In use problem

I need a solution

Hi,

we have an issue with BU Exec 2010 r3 and our HP MSL2024 tape drive.

Recently our nightly backups have been randomly failing with an error indicating the drive cannot read the media.

One night we will not have an issue, the next night it will fail with a read error.

Yesterday a tape got stuck in our drive and BU exec/HP software were unable to eject it. We had to pull the drive and manually remove the tape.

We tried several times to get the system to read any tape but each time the tape gets stuck and we have to manually remove it.

So, we loaded the tape drive again and after powering up our drives are stuck "in use"

Meaning we are unable to run any tape jobs or to continue to test.

Its been stuck the mode "in use" for about 24 hours now.

We are assuming the tape drive needs to be replaced but before we do we are looking for any feedback that may indicate the issue is not the drive.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

First tape in set ignored

I need a solution

I set up a duplicate to tape job with 5 tapes in a library. The first tape was ignored, so everything was written to tapes 2-5. Fortunately, I really only needed 4 tapes, but when I use 4 tapes next time, I want to make sure they are all used properly.

One caveat - after I labeled and inventoried all of the tapes, I performed a small overwrite to the first tape as a test, then set all of the real tape jobs to append. The first tape did show up as appendable, so I don't think any overwrite protection was the culprit.

Any ideas? Next time around, I'm going to try setting the first tape job up to overwrite and all the rest to append, but I'm not sure why that would make a difference.

Agent Needs the Server to Reboot? WHY?

I need a solution

This is crazy.

I have my new BE2015 server online and i started the migration of the agents from BE2012 to BE2015.

It is 100% un-acceptably that a reboot it required.  IT will takes months to do the migration if i have to schedule a reboot for every server that gets the BE2015 agent.

Please tell me that there is a better solution?

Sharing the Same Drive for B2D and DEDuplication

I need a solution

I have a new Server 2012R2 running BE2015.

I have two 10TB Volumes(drives) for backups.  there is also a seperate OS drive.

I want to run B2D and DeDuplication jobs to the each of the volumes.

Then put both in a disk pool.

This would allow for me to take a volume offline (out of the pool) when there is a drive failure and not affect backups.

So what are the pros and cons for putting b2d and DD on the same volume?

I need a solution

People,

At the moment my Backup Exec 15 database is running on

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition (32 bit) (SP2) - 10.50.4000.0

which I'd like to migrate it into Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition (64-bit) (SP2) - 11.0.5343.0

so how to do that safely without leaving any issue to the current backup job & SQL DB maintenance task if there is any ?

Thanks

Backup Exec 15 Feature Pack 1

Windows Server 2012 R2

==========================

Hi, i'm running VA scan and the results show that i need to disable ssl 2.0 and 3,0.

I have disabled it from internet options level but the results from the VA scan still appear.

Anyone knows how we can disable the ssl v3 and are there any implications of doing this to the backup services?

Hi All

Thank you for taking the time to read my query.

I have recenently updated my hyper-v host from server 2008 to 2012R2.

I have re-intalled the Agent onto the server but now backup exec does not see the hyper-v servers at all.

Does anyone know if there is a compatabilty issue or if server 2012 is not supported by backup exec 2010.

Thanks

Mike

Hello,

We're currently adding the ability to document BackupExec as part of our Server Documentation Tool and have an issue.

When selecting files for a RedHat Enterprise Linux server from the Backup Exec everything looks fine

Selections.png

SelectionText.png

However when you run the Get-BEBackupDefinition cmdlet the selection shows as BackupExec.Management.CLI.BEUnrecognizedSelection

Does anyone have any ideas? Is this a bug in the PowerShell cmdlets?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Does Backup Exec Dump SQL Server Backups to disk first?

$

I need a solution

Over the weekend I was surprised to discover that Backup Exec was dumping our SQL Server databases.  What led me to this discovery was that we were out of space on the C drive on the production server.  This is bad.

It looks as if BE dumps to disk first and then moves those dumps to tape.  Is this the case?  Since I already had another script doing database backups (but not to the C drive !!!), it's now not 100% clear what is doing what and why.  I'm not sure how BE works but I do not see any backup devices defined in SQL Server so I have concluded that it must dump to disk first.  But then I cannot see where I could change that behavior, maybe to dump to another drive.

Cloud Backup - best practice

I need a solution

Hi,

I am running BE2015 to tapes and would like to move towards cloud storage (Amazon S3).

Currently I am backing up about 2TB storage including a SQL DB of 150GB on 2 physical servers to tape.

Is backing up to Amazon a viable solution with this amount of data and does BE also manage source deduplication?

Are there any other compession techniques to minimize bandwith? Like an option for indefinite "syntetic full" backups?

Thanks,

Teek

Medium changer not showing up in device manager

I need a solution

Hello

We have a Windows 2012 R2 serve with a HP StoreEver MSL2024 autoloader attached. It was all working ok until it randomly started going offline in Backup Exec 2014. In device manager the Tape drive was showing up as HP Ultrium 5-SCSI SCSI sequential device and the medium change was showing up as "Unknown medium changer".

I thought that changing to the HP Ultrium 5 drivers from HP for the autoloader might fix this issue (I should have read more before I did this as I know this is wrong now) but now the tape drive is showing up as Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-5 drive and no medium changer shows up at all.

I haven't removed the autoloader from BE yet, but it's still showing as offline.

How can I first get the right drivers back on to the tape drive (the generic Microsoft ones) and then secondly how can I get the medium changer showing up again? Then how can I get BE detecting the autoloader properly?

Thank you!

Certain Volume failing on Backup Job Error Code = e0008445

$

I need a solution

I have a rather large backup job that goes through multiple servers and does incremental backups every night. I have a file server with 6 drives. Every drive backs up successfully except the last one. It fails every night on this drive. Here is the error I see:

e0008445 - The media operation was terminated by the user.

I am fairly new to Backup Exec taking over an environment from someone else, so I may be looking in the wrong places for clues, but this is the only error I can seem to find. Maybe I am looking in the wrong place for errors/logs?

The only other thing I see is under details for that servers backup, it shows backup status as "Canceled" for the last drive while the other drives that are backing up correctly say Backed up.

Thanks for any help!
