Tape Library Not Detected by BE 2014 and device manager (Windows SERVER 2012)

I need a solution

Hi everyone,

I have recently migrated from BE2010 to BE2014 and noticed that the tape libary is not being detected by both windows and BE. It used to be detected without issues on the old server and is showing up in device manager there too. The one thing that was changed on the library is that instead of using the old SCSI tape drives, we replaced them with SAS tape drives. The tape drives, though, are being detected both by device manager and BE.

This is a DELL ML6000. Normally, I would ask the vendor but it is already out of warranty. Just taking my chance here if anyone has had this problem before. I have already installed the latest firmware for the library. I guess I should mention that this is not connected via fiber. Thanks in advance/

OLD environment: Windows Server 2003 R2, BE 2010

3 LTO SCSI Drives - detected

ML6000 - detected

NEW environment: Windows Server 2012 Standard, BE 2014

3 LTO SAS drives - detected

same ML6000 - not detected

Changing priority on duplication jobs BE 2012

I need a solution

I am running BE 2014 SP1.

After a backup I run two duplication jobs.  I want to adjust the priority of these jobs.

I tried using the GUI to adjust the prority but this changed the priority of the backup job and left the duplication priority at medium.  I want to adjust only the priority of the duplication jobs.

Is this possible, if so how?

Thanks

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

Goodday, I thought it is a good idea to wait before sbs be2014 sp1 is out before upgrading.. But the sentence 100% faster backups made me curious what would happen on my server !

I downloaded the binaries, license codes (still not an easy process, but slightly better than in the past)

run install, installed the license keys, and ended in an endless loop dedup option no longer supported, no way of getting out there.

phoned support, they told me to not install the licenses, install trial, and after that the licenses. took me 30 minutes on the phone with support to find this out..

ok, all went good after that

run liveupdate, this tell me that sp1 is soon ready for download, but i have it already installed !

and now the first backup.... eagerly waiting...

scenario is single sbs server -. b2d full backup 350gb

with be2012 is took 6 hours 44 minutes, with be2014 it took 6 hours and 42 minutes...

now I am lost....

where is the 100% faster backup promise ?

why is the install procedure ending in a loop ?

why tell liveupdate that sp1 is soon ready for download while I have it already ?

Thanks,

Pieter Timmerman

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if there is any posibility of restoring a differential MS SQL database backup after a full restore completed that had the "Leave database ready for use" option set? I apologise if this question has been answered before.

I need a solution

Hi

Assuming i will upgarde from BE 2010 R3 to BE 2014,

1. In order to restore old jobs (not active), do i need to re-catalog the tapes? or i will be able to direct-restore?

2. on active jobs that run every day, based on full and incremanetal with True Image Restore, will i be able to maintain the active daily incremental jobs without running Full backup first after the upgarde?

Thanks

Location of CdbsMutex file on Linux (RHEL)

I need a solution

Is the location of where beremote creates the CdbsMutex file configurable? I've noticed that it gets created in the current working directory where the process was started. At boot time through the /etc/rc.d/init.d/VRTSralus.init file, it is created as /CdbsMutex. I were to log in as root and execute "/etc/rc.d/init.d/VRTSralus.init start" it is created as /root/CdbsMutex. I would think that this should be configurable somewhere in the /etc/VRTSralus/ralus.cfg file, but it seems there is no document that contains *complete* information on what is and could be in that file.

I would like to have the process always create CdbsMutex in /var/run, /var/run/VRTSralus, or somewhere down the /var/VRTSralus directory tree. As a matter of fact, a best practice would be to not have it be created in whichever directory you happen to be in when starting beremote.

Thanks in advance for any information.

I need a solution

I'm currently doing full & differential backups of my ESXi 5.1 systems using the AVVI and GRT for applications for one backup set and GRT for files (without applications) for another backup set. I'm currently on BE 2014 SP1.

The set with GRT for applications contains an SQL-server. Backups run just fine.

The other set contains 5 servers. The full backup runs fine. The differential backups however give the following error for all included VM's:

  • V-79-57344-38749 - Backup Exec was unable to prepare Microsoft SQL resources for Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) operations.  Therefore you will be unable to perform GRT-enabled restores of Microsoft SQL data for 'SQL-server\instance1' from this backup.

I'm wondering why I get the errors. The SQL-Server it mentions is not even included in the backup set and application GRT (thus GRT for SQL) is not checked. So for every server in the backup set, I get an error for a feature I disabled and for a server I didn't even include in my backup set!

I tried recreating the job, but still get the same errors.

BE2014 - The error "The BackupExec Server service terminated unexpectedly" happens every other day

Hello,

We have this problem on another BE2014 server that is keeping the jobs from running without intervention. For the past few days, the Backup Exec server service has been crashing with the error:

The Backup Exec Server service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 3 time(s).

These are the timestamps from the system logs.

10/05/2014  2:03:38 PM    The Backup Exec Server service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 3 time(s).
10/05/2014 2:03:18 The windows Error reporting service entered the running state
10/05/2014 2:01:57 The windows Modules installer service entered the stopped state

10/03/2014 6:38:15 AM    The Backup Exec Server service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 2 time(s)
10/03/2014 6:38:07 The windows Error reporting service entered the running state
10/03/2014 6:35:23  The windows Modules installer service entered the stopped state

10/01/2014 1:28:19 PM    The Backup Exec Server service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s).
10/01/2014 1:28:12 the windows error reporting service entered the running state
10/01/2014 1:25:17 the windows modules installer service entered the running state

From the application logs, each Error in System log is preceded by an Event 1001. On all three instances, the event 1001 is either of these 2. Both seem to point to a SystemOutofMemoryException of System.web or Mscorlib. I am not sure why this is happening since this is just a standalone BE Server on a Windows Server 2012 Standard with 16GB of RAM. As always, thanks in advance for any help or input that you can provide.

Trouble establishing trust between BUE server and RHEL 6.5 agent after upgrading to BUE 2014

I need a solution

I have Backup Exec 2014 running on a Windows 2008 Server, and I currently have the BUE client installed on three different Windows servers, which are communicating properlyw ith the BUE server. However, I'm having problems establishing trust between my RHEL 6.5 server and the Backup Exec server. RALUS installed without a problem on my RHEL 6.5 server and I can ping the RHEL server's dedicated network interface from the BUE server. However, when I attempt to add the RHEL 6.5 server to the BUE server list, the "inserting server..." window pops up, the progress wheel turns, but nothing ever happens. After 30-45 minutes of waiting (the process doesn't time out) I have to go through the disconnect routine—clicking the "Disconnect" button and then confirming my decision—twice before the process completes. Once the connection/trust establishment process fails, my RHEL server is listed with a status of "Connection not established." At that point the only thing I can do is remove the server.

The RHEL firewall is currently disabled and RALUS was communicating with the BUE server before I upgraded to 2014. What am I missing?

Hello everybody,

please can anybody confirm that Backup Exec 2014 SP1 does not install (and does not need) Symantec tape drivers installed, instead the Operating System drivers (in this case from Hewlett Packard) are used?

Is this new in Symantec Backup Exec 2014 or do I miss something?

How about adding Linux VMs Servers to Backup Exec 2014?

Don't know how can I add Centos 5.x and 6.x to Backup Exec 2014 V-Ray edition. Backup Exec gives error every time I try to add the Linux VM.

The server was unable to complete the requested operation

Any ideas how to create friendship between backup Exec 2014 and the Linux VMs?

I need a solution

I am currently running BE 2014 14.1.1786.0 patched the the latest available updates from LiveUpdate, on Server 2012 Standard. 64GB Ram, Dual Xeon E5-2620 2.00 GHz. 10TB local disk storage with tested 250MB/sec+ IO speed, perfectly capable system for BE dedupe storage.

I am currently troubleshooting why my deduplication jobs start out at great speeds (3000-6000MB/min), and then eventually slow to a halt. My recent discovery is that if I manually start a crcontrol --processqueue during a duplicate or backup job, the speeds die gradually until either the jobs hangs, or the queue finishes processing. I have a job that backs up a fileserver of 2TB, catalogs, then duplicates to tape over the weekend. This past weekend it backed up without issue, 4 Hrs,46 Min at 5,500 MB/min. The duplicate to an LTO6 tape hung after about 26 hours. I have numerous other jobs running, but never more than 4 simultaneous jobs to/from the dedupe. I am already rescheduling catalog jobs for outside the backup window, as well as pausing the tape device until B2D jobs complete so the duplicate jobs run sequentially after B2D completes.

My question at the moment is whether it's possible to disable the automatic "crcontrol --processqueue" task that BE runs at 00:20 and 12:20 daily. I believe this or another task is killing my larger jobs, and want to delay it until the disk is idle of backups. Any help would be appreciated.

Backup Exec 2014 & Tape Backup Configuration/Plan

I need a solution

I am looking for a 'simple' Tape Backup plan.  I need to make periodic tape backups and monthly(?) have them shipped off-site for storage.  Then I will make a new set of tape backups and rotate these out with the one which are off-site.  I probably should throw in weekly are bi-weekly incrementals or differentials.

I realize that there are a large range of Tape Backup plan possiblilities.

Also, I am not very familiar with how to set up Tape Backups.  I see terms like 'media' set, 'media vault', robotic libray, etc.  I have looked these up in the Symantec Glossary.  What is the best way to configure (implement) these?  Are there any good Tutorials out there?  The backups are of already compressed files to LTO-6 Tapes with the amount of data being around 20 to 30 Terabytes.  The Tape Backup Hardware is a Dell TL2000.  The files are being backed up from a Dell NX3200 NAS.  The Dell NX3200 NAS is where Symantec Backup Exec 2014 SP1 is installed.

Thanks in Advance.

Backup Exec 2014 not compatible with Windows Server 2003?

I need a solution

Hi all,

I created a support ticket with Symantec about doing a bare metal restore of a Windows Server 2003 server running a combination of Business Portal, SharePoint, and Microsoft Dynamics SL.  I wanted to test to see if Backup Exec 2014 (running on a Windows 2012R2 server) could restore this 2003 server using the recovery iso.  After many calls back and forth, the tech finally told me that Backup Exec not only could not restore this server but it cannot restore any Windows Server 2003 machine. When I told him I had successfully backed up Windows 2003 Servers with Backup Exec 2014. he told me that, yes, you can back the servers up but you cannot restore them. WHAT??  Why in the world would a product allow you to backup a server but not be able to restore it?  This makes no sense to me at all. This product is useless in my migration project of moving all my servers to at least Windows Server 2008 R2.  I had intended to restore my files and folders to the new server machines from my old Windows Server 2003 machines that I had backed up using Backup Exec 2014.  I hope this tech is wrong about restoring Windows 2003 Servers.

So here are my questions to the forum.  Has anyone been successful restoring a Windows 2003 Server using the bare metal restore iso using Backup Exec 2014? Has anyone been successful restoring files and folders from a Windows 2003 Server using Backup Exec 2014.  Any suggestions would be reallly appreciated.  Thank you in advance for your help.

View changes to job definitions before upgrading to BE2014

I need a solution

Hi,

We're using BE 2010 R3 SP4 and considering upgrading to BE 2014.
We backup more than 100 servers each night and on weekend and almost every server got it's own seperate backup job definition, so we have A LOT of jobs defined.

I know that at the end of the uprade you get a migration report stating all the changes to the jobs and schedules.

Is there a way to run some kind of migration tool that can give me a report about changes that are going to occure WITHOUT having to acctualy upgrade?

I'm trying to decide what would be less painfull - to upgrade the current server and deal with all the job changes or making a fresh install on a new server and defining EVERYTHING from scratch?

Thanks
