Backing up machines on Backup Exec 2012 from VM's on ESX5.5.0 update 1

I need a solution

All

We have a HP server running ESX5.5.0 update 1. It currently hosts 6 vm's, all windows based.

We want to backup these 6 machines to our D2D device, then to tape.

Without creating an individual job for each of these vm's, is there a way that Backup Exec 2012 can simply access the datastore, and through one job, archive these 6 vm's? I know that it isnt a huge task to create 6 jobs, however as this number grows, it would obviously be better to have one job backing up the entire contents of the datastore.

Being a relatively new user to BE any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Glenn

Backup Policies on BE2014

Hello,

Nice to see the Job Monitor and multi-server backups back in BE2014. We rolled back to BE2010 rather than struggle with BE2012.

I have installed a demo of BE2014 but am really missing Policies and Selection Lists.

Are those included in BE2014 or will they be soon? We found policies and Selection lists a great fast way to manage our servers.

We have about 25 that we are backing up with BE.

SQL incremental fails

The Backup Exec SQL Agent was not used to create the last full, differential, or log backup of this database. You must use the SQL Agent to run a full backup before you can run a differential backup or transaction log backup.

Am getting this error. I have seen many articles about this here. I need to know whether backup exec wil stop showing this only if the SQL's default backup is stopped totally? wont it work if the job are scheduled in a way that these backups doesn't coincide at the same time?

Please advice!

I need a solution

Hello,

Currently we have BE 2012 installed in windows 2008 , we are planning to install 2014 in windows 2012

Can we install BE 2014 fresh and copy the catalogue from BE 2012 , will the backup/restore works ?

or

Just upgrade 2012 to 2014 on windows 2008 and install BE 2014 on windows and move it ?

I believe Be 2014 support 2012 Windows agent  does it require reboot when upgrading the agent to 2014 ?

Please help...

Running Backup Exec 2010 R3 On a Legacy Server-2000 Box

I need a solution

Because I need to mimic what customers in the field are using, I need to keep a VM server-2000 box running.

On that box I'm backing up successfully:

1) C:\ drive

2) D:\ Drive

3) The Sql instance on it

4) Utility partition

Not backing up successfully:

5) SystemState

For the last couple of weeks, everything has backed up successfully except the ststemstate. I've rebooted the server, looked at services, HD space, looked at logs. This used to work, I cannot ID any changers that would cause the SS not to back up.

Below are my error messages:

Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe000847c - An error occurred retrieving System State files.
The System State file could not be backed up.
Final error category: Resource Errors

V-79-57344-33916 - An error occurred retrieving System State files.

I'm stuck having to backup this server until the software we sell is no longer supported for our customers.

Any thoughts anyone?

Thank you

Remote host backup VM backup fails

I need a solution

Hi all,

This post is related to this original discussion
https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/err....

We have a hyper-v host (call it server1) with backup exec 2010 installed. One of the jobs backs up VM's on another phsical hyper-v host (server2).

Our backup of the VM's on server2 is failing with the error "e000e020 - The job was scheduled to run, but the availability window closed before the job could start. There may not have been any destination devices available during the window, or the job may have been submitted to run when the window was closed."

Now I know about the availability window adjustment, but the thing I notice is that after this type of error occurs, if I try and connect to the remote host or test the credentials to connect it just hangs. Last night I reregsitered the writers and rebooted the server2 to resolve this issue. After I did that, I tested the credentials to make sure I could connect to the remote host and it succeeded and passed. So I let the backup run last night and sure enough it failed again with the same e000e020 error.

I dont think this is a problem with the schedule window. Whats happening is the attempt to connect to the remote host server2 is failing. The backup gets stuck in the snapshot processing and never stops. After I did the reboot the credentials check passed but for soem reason when the backup started it got hung up in the snapshot processing and just hung there until it went beyond the availability window.

I did notice these errors on server2. Is this a credentials issue that the Administrator account used to connect is being denied?

Restore of NDMP fails

I need a solution

I have had an ongoing issue with my Backup Exec 2010 R3 and my NetApp SAN CIFS. I believe, but am not certain, that it was coincident with the upgrading of the NetApp controller firmware. All of a sudden, I could not restore any backed up NDMP files! The backups were good, but I kept getting restore errors. After going round and round with Symantec and NetApp support, I was able to figure out myself a workaround: I could restore directories, but not individual files. Which worked fine until I had to restore a 20Mb Word doc that was in a 150GB directory! So I'm back hoping that in the interim, something has been found or some new eyes might see this and have a clue.

Here is the error I receive:

Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe000130a - The NDMP server returned a restore error.
See the NDMP Log for more information.

Instead of writing the files, it creates directories with the files names! You can see that the real crux is the Path Could Not Be Created in the NDMP log, right after the "path" whcih includes the filename with the curious  /: appended. Why would Backup Exec try to create a directory instead of restoring the file?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Can't Progress Past ADK Installation for SDR Creation in BE2014

I need a solution

I'm creating the SDR iso for the first time on my BE2104 media server. The install wizard requires ADK to be installed. As it's a large download, I downloaded it manually from the MS website and installed OK. When I run the SDR wizard it tells me that I require the ADK to be installed, after I click on Next I get a pop up saying that a newer version of the kit is already installed. After I click on OK on the pop up I'm returned to the ADK install page of the SDR wizard telling me I need the ADK and to click next, so I end up in a loop.

How can I progress the SDR setup if I've manually installed the ADK?

Thanks,

Has anyone experience the same as me regarding the lack of support during Sydney Australia moring session for Backup Exec 2014? I tried to call Symantec again this morning at 9:06am a case that has been drag on for a whiles but the Symantec call system keep drop me off the call when the services desk tried to transfer me to U.S. support team. I got drop off 4 times and finally the services desk transfer me to a duty manager and ask me to wait for another hours for India team to come online as US team unwilling to take on call as they are about to finish of their day in an hour. He also advise if I spoke to them the maximum is 1 hour support time.  I have even worst experience on weekend support but don't worth to mention in here. I have no one I can escalate this issues and would like some feedback from Australia and New zeland customer if they have experience the same issues?

Very slow rate on fileserver backup with Backup Exec 2012 SP 4

I need a solution

Hello,

I've read a lot of post here but didn't find solution. I'm using Backup Exec 2012 SP 4 to backup file server. Both servers are Windows 2008 R2 x64. The backup is full to disk ( 1 per week ) and after that duplicate to tape. The other days of the week is differential.

The speed of the full backup is 152 MB/min

The speed of the differential is 1200 MB/min

What could be the reason for the slow speed on the full backup. Is there a way to improve it. The servers are connected on 1 Gbps. The connections is OK. If I try to copy files between the servers the speed is OK.

Hi,

in customer that have this scenario bellow:

1 Host VMware with 4 VM's:

VM1 = SQL

VM2 = SQL

VM3 = Exchange

VM4 = AD;

And he has EMC Data Domain to do backup to disk.

My mode of licensing bellow is correct ?

- Deduplication option, to permit do Backup To Disk using EMC Data Domain. Or none option is necessary to use EMC Data Domain ?

- 4 agents of Application and Database to protect all of 4 applications.

Successful failures with CIFS backed up from symbolic links

$

I need a solution

We have some NetApp CIFS shares that we need to backup.  We do not own the NDMP Agent license.  Googling quickly revealed others get around this by simply running the mklink command, and making the CIFS shares symbolic links on the backup server.  I did this.  I then created a test job, selected all the files and dirs in the CIFS share through the symlink, and tried the job.  It ran, showed successful, but the byte count is just 900 bytes.

I go to do a restore (realizing just 900 bytes means there's not one to do) and there is nothing to restore.  I go back to the job and see all the files and dirs are indeed selected.

What gives?  I've been googling, but cannot find the problem.  It is because the account to backup that local drive is "use the system's logon account"?  And the local server's system account doesn't have the rights?  Wouldn't this cause an error?   The thing that gets me is no error.  Just "Successful".
